Thin Client Services and Support
Perhaps you have been thinking about thin clients, what they are and why they might be worth considering given the IT budget constraints so common today. As an alternative to PCs, thin clients increase productivity, reliability, and security while decreasing Total Cost of Ownership by at least 23% and as much as 57% over typical networked PCs. These reductions are achieved through improved employee / user productivity and efficiency and lowered cost of network and systems maintenance. But thin client advantages don’t stop there.
Application installs and upgrades are simplified.
The system administrator manages the accounts the thin client terminals use. A major benefit is that since all applications are run from the server(s), there is no local installation and maintenance of software applications at the thin client or end user.
Thin clients also ensure that users will stay productive by permitting new applications to be deployed quickly, without disruption to your users. Upgrades are a one time operation done at the server such that upon completion all thin client users have been “upgraded” simultaneously. Using management software, an administrator can manage up to tens of thousands of devices over the network or a modem from a central location using industry standards such as DHCP and SNMP.
And when it comes to deploying new desktops, nothing is easier than a thin client. Forget about PC staging and hard disk image management––a thin client can be set up in five minutes by a non-technician, from opening the box to logging on.
With thin clients, managing security is enhanced and simplified.
Your data is protected in many ways when you use thin clients. For example, since you don’t have floppy or hard drives on the desktop, data is almost never lost, stolen, or corrupted by mechanical failure, virus, or malicious attack. Because all data is stored on central servers, your virus-checking software will always be up to date. Virus checking software will also reside on central servers. This places more control in the hands of the System Administrator and relieves the end user of the responsibility of keeping their antivirus software up to date.
Furthermore, since all user data and files are resident on the server, central backup is possible, thereby freeing the user of this task. This enables you to enact a more disciplined backup strategy rather than having to rely on each individual user to perform hard drive backups.
Thin Client Benefits include:
- Fully manageable desktop computing
- Real alternative to Microsoft (i.e. Linux-based)
- Reliable hardware; no need to replace every 3 years
- Embedded emulation for server independence and high performance
- Low power consumption (better for the environment and the budget)
- Much better data security
- No exposure to computer viruses
- Easy to deploy for new users
- High ROI and low TCO
Remote Access Thin Clients
With the use of remote access software, cost effective remote offices can be set up using thin clients. Security is assured because communication between the thin client and the server is SSL encrypted which eliminates the maintenance problems of VPNs or dedicated circuits. Thus a user at a remote office need only type in a known URL to gain access to all applications as if they were at the home office whether they are traveling or at their desk.
